SHP Import¶

Importing GIS data is simple in Ürban PAD. To get started, follow the tutorial below.

Importing Road Networks¶

Step 1: Make an SHP file¶

Transform your GIS data into an SHP file.
Load the SHP file into a GIS software.

Recommended GIS software: Quantum GIS and fGIS are free and easy to use.

Select the area you want to export from the SHP file.

Select your layer.

Select the section of the road network you want to use in your city.

Step 2: Import the SHP file into City Designer¶

Click File on the City Designer menu.

Select Import SHP from the dropdown menu.

Select your SHP file using the Explorer. (You may create an SHP folder within your City Project - see What Is a City Project?.)

Select the specification you want to use. (See City Designer: Creating a City Specification.)

Select the center of the surface you want to create.

Enter the surface size.

Select where you want to save the surface created from the SHP file in the Export folder.

Click Yes to continue when prompted.

Verify that the number of roads is reasonable. The amount of time it will take to import the surface is directly proportional to the number of roads. A network of 440 roads will take about 1 minute to load on a standard machine.

The SHP file will be displayed on the heightmap after it is imported. You may now begin creating your city on this heightmap (see City Designer: Generating a City in Ürban PAD.)
